Amsterdam: 1705. From Schenck's Atlas Contractus. 22"x19". Dark and crisp impression with very light soiling and an archivally repaired tear at the bottom center fold. Rich period color. A very nice copy indeed of an exemplar of the cartographic art. Item #619030
Schenck was a map engraver and publisher. The two hemispheres in this map were derived from Hevelius. The smaller circular diagrams illustrate the cosmologies of Brahe, Ptolemy and Copernicus, and the illumination of the Moon by the Sun (its phases), the orientation of the Earth at is moves around the Sun during the year, and the effect of the Moon on the tides.--Kanas, Star Maps, 6.3.4.2.
