Tabula Geographica Terrae Sanctae [Geographical Map of the Holy Land]

Francois Halma, 1704-1717. Hand-colored copper Engraving. Image 8.25" x 26.25"; sheet 10" x 29" Fine condition. Item #419024

An uncommon panoramic view of Israel, oriented with north at top left and divided into the twelve tribes with a key at bottom. The title cartouche shows Moses and Aaron looking at a map. This map was published by Francois Halma between1704 and 1717; he copied it from one made by Bonfrerius in 1631. It was uncommonly generous in cartographic circles of the time to let Bonfrerius keep the credit. After 1704 the map was published in three different Dutch Bibles up until 1717. Which edition this particular map came from is indeterminate. Two sheets joined, as issued. Poortman and Augusteijn 167. Always securely packed and dispatched rapidly. Professional sellers of antiquarian books, maps and prints since 1994. Satisfaction guaranteed.
