INSCRIBED WITH A PEN AND INK DRAWING BY THE AUTHOR / ARTIST."To Mrs. Kate B. Noel, / Friendly souvenir of / the author / F.A. Bridgman / New-York 1890 / 28 March." The illustration occupies the bottom third of the page and appears to be a scene at a theater. Bridgman was a renowned painter in the "Orientalist" tradition. He trained in France along with Thomas Eakins, and exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1877 and the Paris Exposition in 1878 and 1889. He received the Cross of the Legion of Honor. Bridgman exhibited over 300 paintings in New York in 1890, so this illustration probably was done then. He spent a great deal of time in Northern Africa painting street scenes, and lived in Algiers with his wife.
