Inscribed by the daughter whose parents bought the house that Hawthorne lived and wrote various novels in. Her mother wrote under the pen name "Magaret Sydney" and her father owned D. Lothrop Publishing Co. The inscription reads: "For Robert Beauchamp This book is being inscribed in the room which was the study of Mr. Hawthorne where he wrote Tanglewood Tales. Later, after he had added the Tower study, this room became their library. Here he and his family spent many happy hours while he read aloud to them Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels.
